Board of Directors

  • Chairman of the Board: Reverend Dr. Karen S. Boehk

The Reverend Dr. Karen S. Boehk is the Chairperson of the Smithville Community Clinic. In 2003, she was appointed by the Southwest Texas Conference (now the Rio Texas Conference) of The United Methodist Church to serve as the Senior Pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Smithville, Texas. Shortly thereafter Pastor Karen, along with several members of her congregation, caught the vision that a medical clinic was badly needed in the Smithville community to serve those who had no insurance, or were underinsured. Accordingly, Pastor Karen has chaired the Board of Directors since its beginning.

In June of 2017 Pastor Karen retired from pastoring the local church that she might accept the appointment of Assistant to the District Superintendent, Coastal Bend District, on a part-time basis. On July 1, 2023 this appointment was shifted from the Coastal Bend District to the Crossroads District where she now serves as Assistant to the District Superintendent of the Crossroads District on a part-time basis. Since the pastor who followed Pastor Karen at First United Methodist Church decided to retire at the end of June, 2022, Pastor Karen was reappointed to pastor this congregation on a part-time basis. As Pastor Karen puts it, “I totally failed retirement.”

Prior to coming to Smithville, Pastor Karen served as Pastor of the First United Methodist Church in San Benito, Texas (2001-2003), and prior to that she served Asbury United Methodist Church in Corpus Christi, Texas as the Associate Pastor for nine years (1992-2001). She earned her Master of Divinity degree from Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. She earned her Doctor of Ministry degree from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC.

Pastor Karen’s oldest son, Christopher and his family live in Austin, and her youngest son, Matthew and his family live in Grand Prairie. She has five grandchildren, ages 12-17 (three girls and two boys) with whom she enjoys camping and sharing in their respective activities as time permits.

Pastor Karen lives in Smithville with her three donkeys: Sallie, Samuel and Skeeter; her cat, Coco Charlie; and her little dog, Skipper.
